Although I work in IT field and yet I am a little apprehensive when it comes to perform online. My mother always advised me not to carry out financial transactions online, as there are rampant cases of online fraud. I am well aware of his fears, but I still perform tasks as they are effortless and easy. In addition, there is relatively less loss of cognitive energy in comparison with the transaction to be conducted in the physical world.
While the main fear involved in online transactions is a waste of money there are other things that need protection, and identity theftm that makes the most of online theft. Online thieves are everywhere and are looking for all that can be used or sold. Therefore, how to avoid or reduce (we can not be sure) have to follow some simple steps that will ensure better security for us and a better surfing experience too. Before I engage the rules I follow to be on the safer side I would ask that we protect online? Is our content, money, software or any other type of intellectual property? Although we do not protect it we can do it if we can protect our user name and password. Yes, the most important thing is the registration certificate of the individual. If we are successful in protecting it, then everything else will be automatically protected. I think now I am absolutely clear. So let us begin with the rules.
Rule 1 - I will continue to deal only with trusted sites. This is the foremost and most important point. Sometimes what hackers do is that they spoof the web address and web site spoofing and have access to enter confidential information that is directed straight to the hacker. In technical terms, it is known as 'phishing'. To avoid this type of attack is always remember to click the padlock icon in the lower right corner of your browser and check the certificate that is issued on the website by the Certified Authority.
Rule 2 - I will ensure that my identity is passed through the HTTPS protocol. Here I would like to talk a bit about encryption. Encryption is a process that converts plain text into unreadable text also known as cipher text. In fact, when we send data over HTTP then it is easy for hackers to capture the text and read, but when we are using the HTTPS protocol, the data that is sent can not understand how it is encrypted. Therefore, always looking for HTTPS web pages as they are far more assured.
Rule 3 - I will use the public computers carefully. This is the most dangerous place to conduct any transactions online. Most of these computers are on UN-reliable network, and each identity can easily be compromised. What if a public computer has some spyware as a keylogger to record key as we type? Therefore, never use a public computer for the exchange of sensitive information. Furthermore, as an extra step for safety, we can delete the cache and other private files from the browser and the history of computers
Rule 4 - I'll use a virtual credit cards for online purchases. This is a significant step. Suppose I do a lot of shopping online and find out the credentials of the credit card every now and then, so there is a danger of it being misused. Once it gets into the wrong hands, I'm going in deep trouble. Therefore, it is better to virtual cards issued by banks that carry pre-decided amount and the best part is that these are only for one time use and not for repeated use.
Rule 5 - I will not pay heed to mail and attachments received from an anonymous address as May and they include "Trojans" and to send confidential information from computer hackers den.
Rule 6 - I'll keep changing your password and never write them down anywhere. As the saying goes "Change is the only permanent thing. " This means that everything is temporary, even a password. Keep updating your password or other account you are making more and more vulnerable. Also do not write them anywhere for your reference. If the offset falls into the wrong hands, then your security will be compromised. Also try to use different passwords for all accounts.
Rule 7 - I'll create a complex password. Not only hackers, but anyone close to you can get an idea of your password when you create passwords that are associated your name, family, date of birth or any other related matters. Even if you are making this kind of password, then be sure to use some special characters such as dashes, the points, ampersand, exclamation point, etc. Never use a password that the account or username. This is the most common mistake committed by most people.
Rule 8 - I will always use anti-virus and update it regularly. Anti-virus software is an important tool in the fight against viruses and worms that try to infect our computer. Regular software updates is also an important task and every now and then new viruses are created and how to eliminate them must be loaded with new virus definitions.
Rule 9 - I'll keep my browser up to date. Nobody is perfect, nor the browser. There are many safety issues involved. Hackers are working daily to create something new with which they can breach security, so we need to monitor such threats. We must always keep our browser update as to the interface through which hackers can easily access to our computer. We update our viewers as and when needed to fix some bugs or new features to install.
Rule 10 - I'll never forget to log off and then close the browser window. In the case of those web sites that use cookies to track session, when a user logs out, session-only cookies from that site will usually be deleted from users' computers. In addition, the server removes any association with the session, as each session handling in a user's cookie to store useless. This feature comes in handy if the user is using a public computer. As security, we should not rely on the implicit application of the system, and certainly not on a public computer, instead of one should explicitly log out and wait for confirmation that this application has taken place
.these rules are very simple but very important to be followed. One must always keep these rules and thus ensure their online safety and integrity.
